If water is dripping into the firebox, then there’s obviously a chimney leak. You need to call in a chimney repair service right away; this isn’t a problem that you want lingering for a prolonged period. When water reaches the firebox, it can cause cracks in the bricks and mortar. It can also cause a buildup of calcium deposits or the formation of stalactites.
If you detect droplets of water in your fireplace or firebox, then you have a problem likely caused by one or more of the following:
1. Chimney Lacks a Covering
If your chimney doesn’t have a covering, get one. Not only does it keep the rain out, but also helps keep out pests and debris.
2. Cracked Chimney Crown
The crown is the cement portion on top of the chimney. If there are cracks, then water is going to seep through. Even a small crack needs to be fixed. If the damage expands, then the entire masonry may need to be replaced.
Some chimneys have a gas furnace installed. Gas furnaces emit fumes, which hold a lot of moisture. When they condense, the water is going to soak into the bricks. Installing a chimney liner will fix the issue.
4. Damaged Flashing
Flashing is installed along the point where the brick structure comes through the roof. Aluminum flashing is put in to serve as a barrier that seals any gaps between the bricks and shingles.
5. Water Leaking Through the Bricks
Bricks and mortar are porous. They can hold water that eventually leaks into the firebox. Masonry waterproofing should fix the problem, though be sure the proper method is used. Certain sealants like silicone may end up trapping existing water inside the bricks, which over time will cause them to expand, warp, and eventually crack.
Keep Water out of Your Chimney
A chimney sweep should be conducted at least once a year to look for signs of a leak; chimney systems and water don’t go hand in hand. If your chimney leaks, it’s a sign of more damage to come if the problem isn’t addressed. Call Powers Chimney and Masonry for chimney cleaning, chimney leak repair and many more masonry services.
